The Internet of Things: From a Vending Machine to The Internet of Billions of Devices

Landmark B - 3rd Floor - Renaissance Hotel

It is written that the first device connected to the Internet was a vending machine in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. The machine would report its inventory and whether the contents were cold. This was in 1982!

Here is where the network effect took over and the network of today and tomorrow will interconnect billions of devices. It is expected that over 20 billion devices will be interconnected by the early 2020’s. Not only did the network effect take over, but The Internet of Things grew out of the convergence of several technologies, including wireless communication, embedded software and electromechanical systems, wireless sensors, home and building automation, and the growth of smart and small wireless devices. These are all components of the network that we know today.

The singular life-changing impact of the network has been The Internet of Billions of Things. So, what are you going to learn about the Internet of Things at TIA 2016? Healthcare appears to lead the way, but every industry is affected, and there are many aspects of IoT that you'll want to know, as you chart your course to business viability and success:

Texas A&M Transportation Institute

4th and 5th level autonomous vehicles will be ready for the roads in 3 to 5 years, leading to a disruptive and transformational period for the world’s transportation systems. But will the roads be ready for them? With new infrastructure being developed and new traffic flows designed, what will this mean for driving behavior, automotive design, and the impact on other arenas such as retail, oil and gas, media, law enforcement, and many others? How will today’s automotive companies define their businesses and business models tomorrow? Will they be able to become part the “app economy” and the “sharing economy?” How will data from these vehicles be used by automotive companies, retail, cities, first responders? This session will take a deep dive into technologies, products and services development for smart cars, roads and other infrastructure that will launch in the next 5 to 10 years. The session will also explore the way these technologies can not only increase traditional aftermarket sales, but also drive future revenue and branding opportunities for “connected” companies in ways that were not even thought possible10 years ago.
